Learning to play the mandolin is no different from learning other instruments in that it takes time and effort! Anyone can take up the instrument and learn to pluck a simple tune with virtually no tuition. Learning the basic skills comes easier to those who already have mastered another instrument and the basics of reading music. In fact, violin players often find that, because the mandolin is tuned in the same way as a violin, they have very little difficulty learning to play the mandolin, particularly their left hand technique. However it is a fundamental truth that having a teacher who is both skilled in playing the instrument and a good communicator will allow a complete novice to more rapidly acquire the basic skills than just simply teaching oneself!
The mandola and mandocello, being larger instruments with longer necks and wider frets and having thicker, heavier strings, require larger stretches for the fingers of the left hand and greater strength to press down the strings. Therefore some may find these instruments harder to learn initially. However the extra effort is well worthwhile!
It is fortunate that there are some experienced mandolin teachers in Melbourne who can help beginners to start to play the instrument (or the mandola or mandocello) and to assist intermediate players in the advancement of their skills. These teachers are either currently players in the Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra or have previously been members and therefore it is with confidence we can recommend these people to anyone seeking tuition in mandolin playing.
